Bats give wing to Flea theater fest
A cast comprised of The Bats — The Flea Theater’s resident acting company — brings to life two world premieres, now playing in rotating repertory as part of the Flea’s New Play Festival. In each case, the playwright takes the audience on a trip through multiple narratives exploring situations both strange and surreal.
“The Wundelsteipen” runs through Wed., May 23; “A Letter from Omdurman,” through Sun., May 27. For tickets ($20), call 212-352-2101 or visit theflea.org (where you’ll also find a performance schedule). A Double Hitter pass for two shows is $30; Mimosa Matinees, Sat. & Sun. at noon, are $10 for a ticket & cocktail. At The Flea (41 White St., btw. Church & Broadway, three blocks south of Canal).
THE WUNDELSTEIPEN (AND OTHER DIFFICULT ROLES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
Nick Jones reimagines the story of Salome as a Disneyesque fairy tale starring a talking vulture and a scorpion. Elsewhere in the work, a slave is tasked with giving Caligula his morning rise and shine…and two adolescent brothers are visited by a sex fairy from the Internet.
A Letter from Omdurman
Jeffrey M. Jones uses true and invented stories to tell tales of three historical periods: the contemporary United States, OK Corral-era Tombstone, AZ and the Anglo-Sudanese War (which, as every schoolchild knows, ended in the defeat of the Mahdi Army at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898.)
